2008 –100 YEARS OF MONARCHY  ‘Make Bhutan your holiday destination’

In the year 2008, Bhutan will celebrate a hundred years of glorious reign of the Wangchuck Dynasty. The gracious act of the present King stepping down from the throne to give way for his son the Fifth King of Bhutan, will be another important event you can be a part of.

2008: 100 years of monarchy : Come celebrate with us on this joyous event for 17th December 2007 commemorates 100 glorious years of the golden rule of the Wangchuck dynasty, for it was in 1907 that the first king Ugen Wangchuck ascended the throne. However, due to inauspicious reasons the actual celebrations will be held in 2008.

Tourists traveling to Bhutan in 2008 will witness this tiny Himalayan Kingdom in celebration and jubilation. This will be a unique opportunity for tourists to experience the year long commemoration throughout the nation. The year will also be marked by the opening of new cultural sites and new trek routes to further enhance this joyous occasion and you could be one of the privileged ones to be a part of the whole experience and get an opportunity to “Meet the Bhutanese People”.

Kings og Bhutan, Wangchuk, Wangchuck

The Royal Heritage Tour & Trek

The tour will utilize the historic route the Royalty used to travel from East to West, Palaces and dzongs along this route will be opened. The trek takes you along the historical route used by the royalty when moving from the summer residence Domkar Tashichholing in Bumthang, to the winter residence Kuenga Rabten Palace in Trongsa.

Bhutan Cultural Festivals

Cultural Festivals will take place within a 3-5 day period showcasing clothing, textiles, handicrafts, living quarters and food of a variety of cultures throughout Bhutan.

Traditional Sports Festival

You could also take part in the 3 day annual event that involves traditional sports like Archery, Khuru & Degor, Kanjur Lingkor, as well as competition on rice and butter measurement and grinding. Here you can experience the spirit of Bhutanese sportsmanship alongwith all the festivities and grandeur that accompanies traditional sporting competitions.

Community Based Tourism – Low altitude trek

Opening of new low altitude trek routes especially in rural areas.

Great Himalaya Trail

A 45 day trekking trail from the west to the East, connecting existing high trekking routes to new trails. Trekkers will enjoy authentic welcome by small local villages with local drinks, handicrafts, celebrations dance and blessing.
